About The Music Genome Project
We believe that each individual has a unique relationship with music no one else has tastes exactly like yours. So delivering a great radio experience to each and every listener requires an incredibly broad and deep understanding of music. That’s why Pandora is based on the Music Genome Project, the most sophisticated taxonomy of musical information ever collected. It represents over ten years of analysis by our trained team of musicologists, and spans everything from this past Tuesday’s new releases all the way back to the Renaissance and Classical music.
Each song in the Music Genome Project is analyzed using up to 450 distinct musical characteristics by a trained music analyst. These attributes capture not only the musical identity of a song, but also the many significant qualities that are relevant to understanding the musical preferences of listeners. The typical music analyst working on the Music Genome Project has a four-year degree in music theory, composition or performance, has passed through a selective screening process and has completed intensive training in the Music Genome’s rigorous and precise methodology. To qualify for the work, analysts must have a firm grounding in music theory, including familiarity with a wide range of styles and sounds.
The Music Genome Project’s database is built using a methodology that includes the use of precisely defined terminology, a consistent frame of reference, redundant analysis, and ongoing quality control to ensure that data integrity remains reliably high.
The Music Genome Project is updated on a continual basis with the latest releases, emerging artists, and an ever-deepening collection of catalogue titles.
By utilizing the wealth of musicological information stored in the Music Genome Project, Pandora recognizes and responds to each individual’s tastes. The result is a much more personalized radio experience – stations that play music you’ll love – and nothing else.

Maggie Lieu is gunning for a one-way ticket off this planet.
The 24-year-old is in competition for a spot on Mars One,a proposedmission to Marssponsored by a Dutch non-profit that also has its own reality TV show.
The competition attracted 202,586 wannabeastronauts who applied from around the world. That’s now been narrowed to only100 candidates, andLieu recently got word she’s on theshort list.
Over the next decade, Lieu will join 99 competitors in trying toproveshe has what it takes to populate the Red Planet. She says there will be three aspects to this decade-long training program.
First there’s the group training:Well be put into groups with people that we will potentially be spending the rest of our lives with and seeing how well we get on with them, Lieu says.
Candidates will also undergo technical training, wherethey’ll learn the practical skills needed to man a colony. That’s everything from medical and dental training to learning how to grow food and repair the outpost where the astronauts would live.
But the thing Lieu feels will be the most challenging will be the personal training. Mars One plans to simulate the experience of living on Mars here on earth with isolation simulation postsin the desert and the Arctic.
When we leave these simulation posts, well have to put on the full Mars suit, the gear, and well have to live with time delays when communicating with people on ‘Earth,’ she explains.
But even with those harsh realities,Lieu has been itching to leave the planet since she was a little kid. “When youre young and you say you want to be an astronaut, nobody really takes you very seriously,” she says. But she’s kept her eyes on space and is pursuinga Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Birmingham.
Lieuinsists the Mars One missionisnt as fantastical as it sounds. I think this is inevitably going to happen, she says. All the technology to get to Mars is there.

But two floors below the Conservative Political Action Conference’s cavernous ballroom, there’s an entirely different show.
An eclectic — and sometimes bewildering — mix of more than 120 vendors are peddling everything from handbags and advanced degrees to atheism and books. It’s a mix of unvarnished capitalism and old school political recruiting.
But perhaps most importantly, the bazaar is a place where conservatives can capture the next generation.

“Look at the kids,” said Ami Francisco, who was working the Young Republican National Federation booth. “There are so many young people. There are high school kids here. There are college kids here and this is the future of our party.”
Francisco said the Young Republican’s goal is to create a home for graduating college students through the age of 40, which she emphasized was important to the growth of the Republican Party,
“We want to get them engaged, keep them engaged right from high school to college and into the Young Republicans so they are not dropping off,” she said.
CPAC is the logical recruiting ground to do that. At least 56% of the roughly 9,000 people who registered for the conference this year were of college age, according to organizers.
The cost of renting a piece of this valuable real estate to make your conservative pitch: $4,000.
Of all the conservative gatherings that occur each year, Annette Pettyjohn, director of admissions for Liberty University School of Law, described CPAC as “the best one for me to recruit students.”

A few years ago, Tomball business owner Grayce Egami couldnt find a solution for her young daughters severe eczema so she came up with one herself.
Egami recently opened a new holistic boutique in Tomball, where she sells Divines Serum. She developed the formula herself.
My daughter had a very severe case of eczema, Egami said. We had used everything from steroids to topical treatments and nothing was working. We dealt with that for about two years.
Egami said she went online and did some research about a holistic approach to treating the eczema.
I just wanted to see how I could help, she said. The Divine Serum came out of a need we had. My business just started with word of mouth and has now grown to the boutique.
Egamis Divine Serum helps to treat dry skin and cracked feet by moisturizing up to four hours. She has also formulated a skin cleanser.
Once you have dry skin it causes itching, she said. The itching can cause an infection. The cleanser and serum help to get your skin healthy again.
Egami offers her clients the chance to experience her products at the store.
The skin care line is the biggest thing we have here, she said. It helps those who suffer. A lot of my customers are going through chemo or are diabetic and their skin is dried out. We are just getting the word out.
Egami opened the boutique, located at 105 Pine Street in Tomball, in November, but has been working with lotions and serums for five years. The boutique also sells healing hematite jewelry and is a distributor of Shaklee.

The fossil of an extinct marine predator that lay entombed in an ancient seafloor for 520 million years reveals the creature had a sophisticated heart and blood-vessel system similar to those of its distant modern relatives, arthropods such as lobsters and ants, researchers report today (April 7).
The cardiovascular system was discovered in the 3-inch-long (8 centimeters) fossilized marine animal species called Fuxianhuia protensa, which is an arthropod from the Chengjiang fossil site in China’s Yunnan province. It is the oldest example of an arthropod heart and blood vessel system ever found.
“It’s really quite extraordinary,” said study co-author Nicholas Strausfeld, a neuroscientist at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
The cardiovascular network is the latest evidence that arthropods had developed a complex organ system 520 million years ago, in the Cambrian Period, the researchers said. Arthropodscome in a wide range of shapes and sizes today, but the animals have kept some aspects of their basic body plan since the Cambrian. For instance, the brain in living crustaceans is very similar to that of F. protensa, which is a distant relative but not a direct ancestor of modern species, Strausfeld said. “The brain has not changed much over 520 million years,” he said.
In contrast, blood vessel networks have become both simpler and more complex in the ensuing millennia, in response to changing bodies. The modern relatives of F. protensa are arthropods with mandible jaws, and include everything from insects such as beetles and flies to crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs.
“What we’re seeing in the arterial system is the ground pattern, the basic body pattern from which all these modern variations could have arisen,” Strausfeld told Live Science.

In what is being called a major step forward in genetic engineering, scientists have built a customized copy of an entire yeast chromosome. Experts say it may lead to a better understanding of how the thousands of genes contained in these packages of genetic material work together in everything from yeast to humans. And it may make it easier to make designer yeast, creating living factories that churn out everything from antibiotics to biofuels.
Johns Hopkins University professor Jef Boeke says it started with a coffee shop conversation with a colleague.
I mentioned casually to him that, of course we could make the yeast chromosome if we wanted to, but why on Earth would we want to do that? And he practically literally started jumping up and down with excitement when I told him that, he said.
So Boeke, the colleague, Srinivasan Chandrasegaran and a third partner, Joel Bader, spent the next year discussing how they could engineer the chromosome to make it worth the enormous investment of time and money it would take.
They decided to create an artificial version of chromosome III, one of the smallest of yeasts 16 chromosomes. It carries about 100 genes. Boeke says scientists have studied it for years, adding It is the sentimental favorite of yeast geneticists.
Block by block
Boeke and his colleagues recreated their favorite chromosome, gene by gene, with synthetic chemical building blocks. They included molecular seams, so they could cut the chromosome apart, take some genes out, add others, rearrange them and stitch it back together in ways that would help them understand how different combinations of genes work together.
Since yeast genes are a lot like ours, Boeke says the research could lead to a better understanding of human genetics.
And perhaps most interesting of all, we think it will be useful for actually improving the strain under certain conditions of growth or production of some useful product, he said.
Different strains of yeast are already used to produce antibiotics, antimalarial drugs, vaccines, biofuels and much more. The ability to custom-tailor chromosomes could give the biotech industry a boost.

(Mars One via CNN)
RALEIGH, N.C. A 23-year-old North Carolina State student is among 1,000 people to make the cut at a possible chance to go to Mars.
The Raleigh News & Observer reported that Charles Parrish II could be hurtling toward Mars in 10 years if he makes it to the final round.
Parrish submitted an application to the Dutch nonprofit Mars One, which last month whittled 200,000 aspiring Martians down to a pool of 1,000.
The Mars One project wants to colonize the red planet, beginning in 2022. There are financial and practical questions about this venture that havent been clarified.
Theres still a physical to pass and an interview to ace. The first crew launching in 2024 will have only four people.
Officials said the Mars One mission will cost $6 billion for the first crew. The idea is for it to be funded by sponsors and media that will pay for broadcasting rights of shows and movies documenting everything from the astronauts training on Earth to their deployment and colonization of Mars.
Out of the applicants, Mars One said it will select a multicontinental group of 40 astronauts this year. Four of them two men and two women are set to leave for Mars in September 2022, landing in April 2023.
Another multicontinental group of four will be deployed two years later, according to the Mars One plan. None of them will return to Earth.
