The Supreme Court fights for the weary black interstate traveler … – 11alive.com

Posted: February 18, 2017 at 3:56 am

Black History encapsulates more than a month. This new daily series will take a look at some lesser known events and people in the world.

The story of Shirley Chisholm.

As the Civil Rights movement dispersed around the nation, Georgia had its fair share of history. Take the Heart of Atlanta Motel Incorporateds case against the United States. The Supreme Court had recently passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which says racial discrimination in public places was unconstitutional.

But the motel refused to rent rooms to black customers.

Moreton Rolleston, the owner, took the case to court citing the Fifth Amendment (he said it went against his right to choose patrons for his business), the Thirteenth Amendment (involuntary servitude), and he added that Congress was going over their control over the interstate commerce (now known as the Commerce Clause).

Congress immediately came back with their own case. They referenced his Fifth Amendment right saying that it does not hinder regulation of interstate commerce. It countered the Thirteenth Amendment with the explanation that it was specifically for slavery and the negative effects of it. And, finally, Congress said its power under the Commerce Clause related to proper sleeping circumstances for blacks traveling on the interstate.

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia took Congresss side in December 1964. The court won; Congress could use power granted to it by the Constitutions Commerce Clause to force privately owned businesses to follow the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The nation successfully fought against discrimination.

Local robotics students headed to World Championship tournament – KOLO

Posted: February 7, 2017 at 8:19 am

CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) – At Eagle Valley Middle School, six students are working to improve their LEGO robot. They’re still not satisfied, even though it played a critical role in them winning the trophy at the Northern Nevada FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Championship last month.

“It was just an incredible feeling!” says Nevan McIlwee, 13. “To see all our hard work just paid off to get to that.”

For this group, which calls itself the Jedi Engineers, winning that competition isn’t enough. But it was a big deal. They beat out dozens of other teams at the competition at UNR. Teams were judged on their robots’ ability to complete tasks and on their problem-solving skills.

Now, this group of seventh and eighth graders is gearing up for the World Championship Tournament in April in Houston, Texas. They will compete against more than a hundred other teams who are also champions in their own countries.

“It means a lot,” says Kai Miller, 12, a Jedi Engineer. “I mean, we’re going to see teams from all over the world. Teams from Europe, Africa, China, Russia, South America… It’s really, really big for our community.”

And while it was tough enough to qualify for this tournament, raising money is the new challenge.

“We are doing huge fundraising because it is going to be so expensive to go to World Festival,” says Lisa Stocke-Koop, Eagle Valley STEM teacher and LEGO coach. “It’s going to be over $20,000 before we’re done.”

That’s because the students have also been invited to compete in an international tournament in England. Their teacher believes the kids are not just an inspiration for other students.

“These guys, they bring tears to my eyes,” says Stocke-Koop. “When I look at what they’ve done and I look at how proud they are of their achievements… every one of these kids could change the world. And I am just so thrilled that I’m a part of their education.”

The team has set up a gofundme account online to raise money for travel expenses. You can find it here.

Targeting cattle production myths

Posted: April 8, 2015 at 4:40 am

CONSUMERS come from Planet Price or Planet Story, Telstra futurist Michael Ossipoff told the Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association (NTCA) conference in Darwin last month.

The red meat industrys Target 100 program communicates with those on Planet Story. As it reaches its third birthday, the program, showcasing progress by cattle and sheep farmers and researchers towards 100 sustainability goals, has put together some statistics about its reach.

Target 100 has completed over 90 research and development projects, accumulated 230-plus producer case studies, created over 80 YouTube videos, enticed over 10,000 Facebook followers, developed 10 curriculum-aligned resources for schools, reached two million Aussies through cinema ads and shared the story of Australian beef and lamb producers with 20,000 urban consumers at events across the country, the program reported in its latest newsletter.

A more recent initiative has been Target 100 Responds, a section of the Target 100 website dedicated to addressing criticisms of the red meat industries.

The necessity to address criticism came up last year, when the US-made movie Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret came to Australia. The movie claimed to uncover a conspiracy against the environment by the beef industry.

Target 100 addressed the movies claims at length, and in measured tones.

It noted that Australian beef production systems are not like those in the US, do not produce any clearing in the Amazon, and that the industry has a range of active research projects looking at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other aspects of its environmental footprint.

Target 100 has its own comprehensive website, a presence on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

New low in Russia-NATO relations: Analysts

Posted: April 3, 2015 at 5:49 am

MOSCOW: Since Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine, relations between Moscow and NATO have dramatically worsened. The Kremlin has threatened a range of responses if NATO moves more forces into Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia.

Mr Evgengy Volk, a political analyst, said: “I believe that at present, the relations between Russian and NATO are at the worst point since the end of the Cold War. I believe that during the Cold War, the relationship was actually sometimes better.”

Since early March, NATO warships have participated in naval drills in the Black Sea. The US has also delivered over 120 armoured units, including tanks, to Latvia in March.

But according to the NATO’s Secretary-General, Russian military flights close to alliance members’ airspace in Europe were intercepted more than 400 times last year.

In mid-December last year, a Russian military jet with its location determining transponders switched off nearly collided with a passenger plane over Sweden.

“I think that the reality is that when youre flying military aircraft around Europe with the transponders turned off, theres always a danger of another black swan event,” said political analyst Chris Weafer. “So long as these exercises are continuing, theres always the potential for another accident that can also negatively impact the situation.

Earlier in March, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Northern Fleet onto full combat alert in a ‘snap readiness exercise’ in the Arctic as the US and several Eastern European NATO countries conducted a series of military exercises near Russia’s border.

Russia has been spending more money on its military and has been boosting military capabilities which were weakened during the 1990s. When Vladimir Putin became president in 2000, Russia spent more than US$9 billion on its military. This has since risen 10 times and is likely to increase again this year despite a sluggish economy.

Transit Workers Union Files Suit Against CTA Over Distributing Campaign Material

Posted: March 31, 2015 at 10:48 pm

March 31, 2015 7:17 PM

Lisa Fielding is a news anchor and reporter for Newsradio 780….

(CBS) The Amalgamated Transit Union claims the CTA has banned workers from sharing literature and talking about anything related to the 2015 Mayoral Race. As a result, theyve filed a lawsuit claiming a violation of First Amendment rights of transit workers.

As is well known, the locals have endorsed a candidate, Commissioner Garcia, and they want to distribute to their materials to their own members in their break rooms while off duty and the CTA is telling them they cant do that even though these break rooms have been open for a great deal of speech of all types in the past, said attorney Sean Morales Doyle.

Tuesday, ATU filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois alleging that CTA is violating the First Amendment Rights of transit workers.

Rahm has essentially installed a free speech red light camera for every public workplace in the city and we are not going to stand for it, said Carlos Azevedo, ATU Local 241.

The union claims CTA posted memos in bus garages and rail terminals barring employees from this kind of communication and warned of fines.

It is our right to have freedom of speech on who we want to support in our training rooms where we are not working and were not going to stand for it. Weve seen this before 30 years ago when Harold Washington was running and were not going to stand for it and thats why were here today, said Ken Franklin, President, ATU Local 308.

The union that represents 10,000 employees has endorsed challenger Chuy Garcia in the race for mayor.

The CTA says there are two state laws that strictly prohibit political activity on government property and on government time. The Mayoral runoff is next Tuesday, April 7.

Navy veteran takes on Saipan's restriction on handguns

Posted: at 3:51 pm

A Navy veteran and his wife are challenging a ban on handguns in Saipan, arguing in federal court that the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands is bound by the U.S. Constitutions Second Amendment.

Ive always been a firm believer in our constitutional rights, whether thats freedom of speech, religion or the right to keep and bear arms or right to privacy, and Im pretty sure that what Im doing in this case is in defense of those convictions, said David J. Radich, 44, a former petty officer third class.

His wife, Li-Rong Radich, was severely beaten by an intruder in 2010, a trauma that her husband says might have been prevented if she had a handgun.

While the islands citizens can receive permits for a select few long guns, the law prevents them from possessing those for self-defense, even at home. Regulation of handguns varies in the four other inhabited U.S. territories. With differing degrees of regulation, they are allowed in Americas only other commonwealth territory, Puerto Rico, as well as in Guam and the Virgin Islands, but handguns are banned in American Samoa.

Born in California, Radich, a former boatswains mate, served aboard the USS Vandegrift, a guided-missile frigate that participated in Operation Desert Shields Maritime Interception Operations in 1990. After a ships rope crushed his right hand, Radich lost his pinky and required extensive physical therapy. Although he was subsequently found fit for duty, he left the Navy in 1993 and enrolled in college, earning a degree in history and education. He taught school in the Detroit area.

Radich said he became comfortable around handguns after a doctor suggested that holding and firing one would be therapeutic for his hand. He bought one and used it for target practice.

Radich said he eventually wearied of the cold weather and general decay of Detroit and in 2006 took a job teaching earth science to seventh- and eighth-graders in Tinian, a sparsely populated island near Saipan thats part of the Northern Marianas. He took a job as an environmental consultant on Saipan in June 2008.

Shortly thereafter, he met Li-Rong and they were soon married.

About 45 minutes after he arrived at work one morning in 2010, his wife called, sobbing, saying shed been attacked. Radich called 911 and rushed home.

I found my wife on the floor of the apartment in really bad shape, Radich said. Her face was unrecognizable.
